Martha Ellis
Martha Ellis is a visual artist with a passion for showcasing a ‘sense of place’ in her signature ‘cut-out’ drawing style using sheet metal.
She is known for her unique, wall-mounted and free-standing artworks, which she creates in her Edinburgh studio. Her aim has been to capture the people and activities that make up ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø, both from the past and the present, and creating a piece that will inspire all who see it.
During 2024, Martha took part in public engagement activities on the ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø campus, and in the wider Musselburgh community, delving into the university archives, physically being in and around the campus, chatting with students, staff and alumni, and running workshops to build a clearer picture of ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø and its impact.
Martha knew how important it was that her work would reflect the voices and stories of ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø students, staff, alumni, local residents, and everyone who has an interest in ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø.
The completed work will stand as a testament to the power of collaboration and to the deep connections we share as a university community.
The Creative Process
Martha’s approach to sculpture creation begins with collaboration and deep research. For this project, that meant connecting with as many people as possible, and she did just that! Martha spent a month immersed in campus life—meeting individuals, listening to their stories, and organising photoshoots to capture authentic moments and inspirations.
For her photoshoots, Martha asked participants to carry on as normal whether teaching, learning, studying, exercising, or eating, while she discreetly snapped quick photos on her phone.
Capturing people in the most natural and authentic way possible was central to Martha’s vision of portraying a genuine snapshot of life at ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø.
The experience was both insightful and enjoyable for Martha—she had the chance to step into lessons, classrooms, and offices, spending meaningful time with different individuals who all had a vested interest in ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø. Whether observing or learning, each moment offered a unique window into the vibrant ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø community.
